GitHub is set to transition its infrastructure to Rackspace, aiming to resolve existing performance issues and enhance user experience through a new backend architecture and expanded server capacity. Previously hosted by Engine Yard, which supported GitHub's growth within the Ruby community, the decision to move was driven by the need for affordable, scalable, and flexible infrastructure to accommodate the platform's rapid growth of over 400 new users and 1,000 repositories daily. Rackspace was chosen for its ability to meet GitHub's extensive requirements, including control over hardware, global data center presence, cloud services, and a reputation for reliability. The move will significantly increase GitHub's resources, including transitioning from 10 virtual machines to 16 physical machines, offering 128 physical cores and 288GB of RAM, and ensuring high availability with failover capabilities. This shift will allow GitHub to move beyond its current shared file system limitations, enabling horizontal scaling and improved performance. The transition will be managed to minimize downtime, with ongoing updates provided as the migration progresses.
